Wolong launches Quantum Infinity high-power motor platform

Wolong Electric America has introduced Quantum Infinity, a new medium-voltage, horizontal induction motor platform engineered for high-capacity applications. Expanding the company's high-power portfolio to reach ratings up to 10,000 horsepower (HP), the platform is designed to provide application-engineered solutions for data centers, oil and gas, pipelines, power generation, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities.

Modular design and rigorous industrial compliance
Built upon the proven Quantum LMV and Quantum Large architectures, the Infinity platform supports voltages from 2.3 kV to 13.8 kV in 2- to 12-pole configurations. Engineered for continuous-duty (S1) operation via direct-on-line (DOL) starting or variable frequency drives (VFDs), the motors feature IP23W to IP55 protection and Class F insulation. The platform complies with NEMA MG 1 and IEC 60034 standards and can be configured to meet the stringent API 541 (Fifth Edition) specifications for harsh petrochemical environments. Hazardous-area-certified configurations are also available for explosive gas and dust atmospheres.

Advanced thermal engineering and electromechanical protection
To ensure maximum reliability prior to physical prototyping, Wolong utilized advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize thermal and mechanical performance. The motors are equipped with specialized features for heavy industry, including low-starting-current designs for weak power grids, advanced vibration and temperature monitoring, and enhanced surge protection. These capabilities allow the Quantum Infinity to reliably drive reciprocating and centrifugal compressors, as well as high-capacity water conveyance systems.

Additional Context: Bearing currents and API 541 in medium-voltage motors
This section details electromechanical dynamics and industrial standards not included in the original press release.

When medium-voltage, multi-megawatt induction motors are operated using variable frequency drives (VFDs), the rapid switching frequencies of the power electronics induce common-mode voltages on the rotor shaft. If left unmitigated, these voltages discharge through the motor bearings to the grounded stator, causing destructive electrical arcing (fluting) that leads to premature mechanical failure. For critical 10,000 HP applications like LNG compression, unplanned downtime is financially disastrous, which is why the American Petroleum Institute’s API 541 standard dictates rigorous protective measures. To comply with these standards and secure VFD-driven operations, platforms like the Quantum Infinity incorporate insulated bearings to block current flow, alongside active shaft-grounding systems (such as grounding rings or brushes) that provide a safe, low-resistance path for these destructive currents to dissipate.
