Volvo Trucks North America starts U.S. production of all-new Volvo VNR

Volvo Trucks North America has begun U.S. production of the all-new Volvo VNR at its New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Virginia. Designed specifically for urban and regional delivery operations, the new VNR is built to navigate congested city streets, distribution centers and dense traffic environments where agility and visibility are essential.

First unveiled in March 2025, the new VNR entered production in February 2026, with initial deliveries scheduled for Clayton, a national single-family homebuilder.

Built in Virginia with major investment
The all-new VNR is assembled at Volvo’s New River Valley Plant, the company’s largest global manufacturing site and the production hub for all Volvo trucks sold in North America. Volvo has recently invested $400 million in plant upgrades, including a new 350,000-square-foot cab welding facility and enhanced paint and material flow systems.

The expansion reinforces Volvo’s long-standing commitment to U.S. manufacturing, with more than 40 years of truck production in Virginia supporting both U.S. and Canadian markets.

Enhanced safety for urban operations
The new VNR integrates Volvo’s most comprehensive safety package for regional haul applications. A sloped hood design and larger panoramic windshield improve forward visibility compared with the previous model, supporting safer operation in pedestrian-heavy areas.

The truck is available with the Volvo Active Safety Platform, including Volvo Active Driver Assist Plus. An optional Camera Monitor System replaces traditional mirrors with digital cameras, improving visibility during lane changes and reversing. Infrared technology enhances low-light performance, reduces glare from following vehicles and provides digital reference lines and auto-pan functionality for better trailer tracking through turns. Integrated side curtain airbags further elevate occupant protection.

Improved fuel efficiency and performance
The new VNR delivers up to 7.5 percent better fuel economy than the legacy model. Gains are achieved through aerodynamic refinements, advanced powertrain enhancements and idle-shutdown systems, helping fleets lower operating costs while supporting sustainability targets.

Engine options include:
  • VGT engine ratings from 405–455 HP and 1450–1850 lb-ft of torque
  • D13 Turbo Compound engine with waste heat recovery
  • Two additional low-NOx D13 engine variants
The truck is built on a 24-volt electrical architecture to support advanced safety and connectivity features.

Flexible configurations for diverse fleets
The VNR offers a tighter turning radius to improve maneuverability in urban and regional environments. It is available in multiple Class 8 configurations, including 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 tractors, as well as straight trucks with various body options.

Axle configurations include Adaptive Loading, Electronically Controlled Suspension and Global Rear Air Suspension. Two trim levels are available:
  • Core: Durable and practical for regional haul applications
  • Edge: Enhanced driver comfort with premium interior features
Part of Volvo’s next-generation platform
The production launch of the VNR follows the introduction of the all-new Volvo VNL. Together, the VNL and VNR reflect Volvo’s application-focused product platform strategy, designed to improve safety, uptime and operational efficiency across North American fleet operations.
