The new Makino D200Z: Superior surface quality and accuracy from an ultra-compact, easily automated 5-axis vertical machining centre

At Makino’s yearly Die & Mould Forum in Kirchheim unter Teck, a new 5-axis vertical machining centre, D200Z, was launched. Superior surface quality, accuracy, outstanding footprint and easy automated production are the key features of the new D200Z, Makino’s latest 5-axis model in the suc-cessful D-series.

Industries: Plastic injection moulds (single and multi-component), multi-cavity moulds, high precision parts, medical, optical and watch components

Applications: 5-axis machining, high-precision machining, carbide milling, mirror surfaces, machining of electrodes

Superior surface quality and accuracy in 5 axes

Makino machines are renowned for their rigidity, stability and precision. The D200Z is no exception with its thick bed, 3-point support and low centre of gravity column. The Z-shaped configuration of the B axis enables a minimum effect of the weight of the workpiece independently on the angle of position. Moreover, high rigidity is ensured through an optimised stroke and minimised force loop. In combination with sophisticated thermal control to ensure effective heat removal, the machine’s rigid structure makes the high degree of machining accuracy possible.

The intelligent GI-Smoothing function, a standard function with Makino’s latest Professional 6 controller, optimises the path when CAM tolerances are too rough for simultaneous 5-axis cutting and thus eliminates the undesired marks at the surfaces to be machined, achieving so far unknown and excellent surface quality.

Increased productivity

Increasing accuracy and surface quality has been achieved without compromis-ing on speed and productivity. The D200Z delivers rapid feed and cutting rates – X, Y, Z: 60,000 mm/min and accelerations of 1.5 g on the X- and Y axes and 2.0 g on the Z-axis. Further, a zero-point clamping system is integrated into the table to reduce set-up times, enabling an overall lead time reduction.

Intelligent functionality
With Makino’s latest Professional 6 (PRO 6) controller, the D200Z is equipped with several intelligent functions to increase productivity of the machine. The controller was developed to meet customer needs for enhanced machining processes through improved safety, ease of operation, reliability and productiv-ity.

Collision Safe Guard – real-time collision prevention system
All the enhanced productivity comes with state-of-the-art safety measures, thanks to Collision Safe Guard, a most advanced real-time collision prevention system that is particularly important and effective in 5-axis applications. Statistically speaking, the most frequent cause of spindle damage is a collision. The main contributing factors are human mistakes in operating, setting, editing, tooling and clamping – all errors that occur on the machine itself. The collision safeguard takes real machining conditions into consideration to prevent collisions.

Ultra-Compact layout
The machine provides X, Y and Z axis travels of 350 x 300 x 250 mm and can hold workpieces up to 300 mm diameter, 200 mm height and 75 kg weight. And all of this in an ultra-compact footprint of 1,500 x 2,200 mm.

Designed for unmanned operation

The D200Z is ready for both pallet and part handling with the robot shutter door easing the path to automation. Intelligent automation solutions from Makino in-cluding complex systems with 6-Axis robots as well as standard automation sys-tems available in the market can be easily integrated with the machine.

Best in terms of scalability

The D200Z has been built keeping productivity and profitability in mind. The machine offers the best solution in terms of scalability to cater to the varying demands of production, allowing the machine to grow with the business. In addi-tion to the standard ATC 20, ATC 40 and matrix magazine of 100 or 300 tools are also available for retrofit. Both the standard ATC20 and the double-capacity ATC40 can be accessed from the front and conveniently fit inside the same splashguard, keeping the machine ultra-compact.

Launched in Europe at Makino’s Die & Mould Forum in January 2017, the newest member of the D-Series family certainly is an attractive proposition, in particular when high demands exist regarding surface quality, accuracy, productivity and footprint.
