Waves dampened gently with maintenance-free igus linear technology in high-speed boats

High speeds and huge waves make for a fun boating experience, but the combination can also put passengers at risk of physical shock every time the boat’s hull strikes the water. Vibration-dampening seats, made with igus slides that help absorb the shocks, are helping to reduce the impact and enhance the experience on the high seas.

Products from Germany-based igus are free of lubrication, maintenance and corrosion, making them ideal for maritime applications. igus runs its North American operations out of Providence, R.I.

Passengers on boats are subject to repeated impacts when the hull of the boat slams against the water. The powerful collisions can quickly lead to serious injury to the spine or internal organs. Such seats must therefore rest on wear-resistant bearings and rails that can absorb the forces involved. Developers of high-speed boats such as Kaj Naval from Poland and Cobra Seats Technology Ltd. from Great Britain use lubrication-free and maintenance-free drylin® linear bearing technology made of high-performance plastics.

Linear guides dampen shocks in boat seats

Kaj Naval has been developing seats for motor boats for seven years. For the latest type of seat, the designers are using a drylin® W linear guides for the spring-mounted shock-absorbers. This guide ensures that the seats slide about gently even at high speeds, absorbing the vibrations of the waves.

The guide carriage has no lateral clearance due to the use of sliding elements made of tribo-polymer. Even after a long operating time, the carriage does not show any signs of wear. In addition, the corrosion-free solution from igus is maintenance-free, lubrication-free and considerably lighter than metallic alternatives such as recirculating ball bearing guides.
