Industrial Automation With Atlas Humanoid Manufacturing Robots

Boston Dynamics and Hyundai Motor Group have launched the Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America. The facility serves as a testbed and training center for integrating Atlas humanoid robots into active automotive manufacturing and industrial automation environments.

Addressing the Industrial Challenge
Manufacturers face the operational challenge of automating repetitive, strenuous, and ergonomically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy loads and sequencing automotive parts. Integrating physical artificial intelligence into active production environments requires a structured training ecosystem where robotic systems can learn complex material-handling sequences in real-world settings before full-scale deployment in automotive assembly lines.

Technical Solution and Responsibilities
Boston Dynamics supplies the Atlas humanoid robots and physical AI capabilities, while Hyundai Motor Group provides the real-world manufacturing infrastructure at the RMAC. The partnership focuses on training the robots to manage the logistics and sequencing of automotive parts prior to final assembly. Zack Jackowski, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Boston Dynamics, stated that the companies have established a clear strategy to optimize the supply chain, production, testing, and deployment capabilities for Atlas.

Deployment and Implementation
The first phase of the RMAC is currently operational at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America. By next year, operations will move into a newly constructed building on the campus, expanding the physical testing facility to approximately ten times its current size. To support this expansion and hardware integration, the partnership will establish a new production facility in the United States capable of manufacturing 30,000 robots annually.

Applications and Use Cases
The Atlas robots are applied directly to automotive manufacturing workflows, initially handling part sequencing and logistics. By 2030, these applications will extend to complex component assembly. Furthermore, Boston Dynamics plans to scale data collection and expand the training process by 2027 to adapt the Atlas platform for additional applications, engaging with existing Spot and Stretch customers in the aerospace, semiconductor, logistics, food and beverage, and life sciences sectors.

Results and Expected Impact
Deploying Atlas robots in a dedicated testing facility enables the precise integration of physical AI into existing digital infrastructure and manufacturing workflows. The initiative provides a scalable framework, with the Hyundai Motor Group planning to deploy 25,000 Atlas units across its global plant network over the next few years. This structured rollout optimizes heavy-load material handling and prepares industrial facilities for fully automated component assembly operations.
