Combined Surge Protection for Compact Metering Systems

Phoenix Contact has expanded its portfolio of surge protection devices with the FLT-SEC-ZP2-…-SV, designed for use in metering installations. The device combines Type 1, 2, and 3 protection in a compact form factor, addressing requirements for standards compliance, space optimization, and integration of intelligent metering system components.

Compact design for integrated metering installations
The reduced installation width leaves additional space for other components mounted on the busbar, facilitating integration into existing panel configurations and supporting higher functional density in metering cabinets.

An integrated voltage tap enables direct power supply to devices within an intelligent metering system, such as smart meter gateways. This simplifies installation by reducing the need for additional wiring.

Compliance with main power supply standards
In the upstream main power supply system, only Type 1 surge protective devices based on spark gap technology are permitted under VDE-AR-N 4100. These devices must not draw continuous operating current for status indication.

The FLT-SEC-ZP2-…-SV meets these requirements through a purely mechanical, current-free status indicator. The integrated spark gap also limits follow current after ignition, preventing unintended tripping of the main service fuses. This ensures compliant installation on the supply side ahead of the meter.

Protection of sensitive electronics and system integration
As a combined Type 1+2+3 device, the system provides coordinated protection against lightning and surge events and is suitable for protecting sensitive electronics within the immediate installation environment.

For intelligent metering systems, the device includes two defined voltage tapping points for connection to the auxiliary application area (RfZ) and the metering termination point (APZ), enabling structured and compliant system integration.

Variants for different grid configurations
The devices are available in four variants for TN-S/TT and TN-C network systems. Versions with impulse current ratings (Iimp) of 7.5 kA or 12.5 kA are offered, allowing adaptation to different protection requirements.

With the FLT-SEC-ZP2-…-SV, Phoenix Contact addresses the need for compact, standards-compliant, and integrated solutions in surge protection and power distribution systems.
