Automated Warehouse Deployment for Medical Device Logistics

Gerresheimer has partnered with Mecalux to deploy two automated pallet warehouses at its manufacturing plant in Peachtree City, Georgia, establishing full control over medical device logistics and inventory tracking. The integration of automated hardware and warehouse management software replaces legacy manual processes to handle high-demand pharmaceutical and biotech components within highly regulated cleanroom environments.

Operational Challenges in Medical Manufacturing
Growth in the North American medical device market required Gerresheimer to expand production capacity, commission highly automated production lines, and establish state-of-the-art cleanrooms. Operating with manual internal logistics restricted the speed, safety, and precision required to manage critical healthcare components. To eliminate human error and maintain rigid quality controls, the facility needed to automate material flows from production lines to storage, ensuring that every component is handled under precise environmental and tracking conditions.

Software-Driven Inventory Control
The technical solution centers on Mecalux Easy WMS warehouse management software interacting with automated storage and retrieval machines. The software monitors the real-time movement of more than 30 distinct types of medical devices directly from the production lines. It algorithmically assigns storage locations based on real-time product demand and issues instructions to the automated cranes for physical transport, ensuring immediate device availability for distribution.

Precision and Reliability Benefits
Transitioning to an automated framework provides total operational visibility and systemic reliability. The automated material handling system ensures strict adherence to cleanroom protocols by minimizing direct human contact with components. By executing real-time data tracking for every stored item, the facility guarantees comprehensive product traceability, which is a fundamental compliance requirement for medical device distribution.
